6 year anniversary!
Mood:  a-ok

Today is the 6 year anniversary of this blog, which began on 3 Nov 2008 as a part of the domain genomicintegrity.org and has segued to become the blog for AGiR!  Action for Genomic integrity through Research!

In order to commemorate this event, I will point you to a 2009 IARC review (from the WHO Internation Agency for Research on Cancer) about human carcinogens, by Baan et al (doi:10.1016/S1470-2045(09)70358-4), and in particular a table from this work, entitled: Evidence for carcinogenicity in humans and for genotoxicity as the main mechanism of the Group I agents assessed.  In other words, this table shows a list of compounds, that can clearly lead to cancer development in humans after exposure, and corroborates the idea that impact upon genomic integrity is the true cause of this disease development.  The table lists 4 general classes of compound exposures and the human tumors that result from exposures to the specific compounds, and also evaluates the evidence for genotoxicity as the main mechanism ('Strong' in very many cases).  Of course, many of the compounds mentioned in this blog and in pages of the AGiR! site are on this list, like benzene, formaldehyde, 4-aminobiphenyl, and so on...

Avoiding exposure to such compounds is definitely a good idea, and clearly they should not be included in products for personal care (even as contaminants, which is documented for at least a couple from the list, for instance dioxin and 4ABP)...

As this tripod site has not been ideal over the years, a gradual transition to the Blogger tool is most likely to occur soon.  (Perhaps even French translations will be attempted - please let me know if this will be appreciated!)

In the meantime I will just mention that the 'art call' for AGiR! - to help increase public interest in genomic integrity by depicting the molecular 'dance' in living cells - is officially open.

Looking forward to seeing your vision!

Take care!
